Biography

Students frequently face economic hardship at Union City High School, but the future is promising thanks in part to teacher Kimberly Moreno. In 2012, when the school decided to establish a Career Technical Education program for the health sciences with Rutgers University, School of Health Related Professions, Kimberly was selected to develop the program, which gives students the opportunity to pursue careers in health care.
In the classroom, Kimberly focuses on planning and delivering lessons using technology to engage and motivate her students. Daily, she strives to improve proficiency and graduation rates at the school. She is innovative in her lesson design and has truly created a classroom that is student focused.
In 2013, Kimberly became the advisor of HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), an international career technical student organization focusing on health-related careers. Under her leadership, the Union City HOSA chapter is over 140 members strong and conducts two blood drives annually, collecting over 400 pints of blood. She has been instrumental in coaching the student members to enter into the competitive events program. This program is designed to motivate members and provide a system for recognizing the competencies developed. Many of Her students have received local, state, and national recognition.
Kimberly is known for going beyond the call of duty. She has an established relationship with the Jersey City Medical Center, where she works as an EMT instructor's aide. She has also served as one of the coordinators of Project SEED (Summer Experience for Economically Disadvantaged), a program sponsored by the American Chemical Society, which gives students the opportunity to do state-of-the-art research under the supervision of a scientist. Kimberly is one of the ski coaches for the winter Special Olympics team. In her community, she finds time to give back by volunteering as an Emergency Medical Technician. She also conducts CPR courses for EMTs, firefighters, police and other community members’.
Kimberly has recently been selected to facilitate and present at various New Jersey Department of Education Initiatives, including the State Board of Education Meeting (June 2016), the “Building Capacity for Career Pathways Summer Institute” (June 2016), and the “STEM Partnership Summer Institute” (August 2016).
